Brann & Isaacson offers its lawyers challenging work, sterling clients, and a small firm setting, all against the backdrop of the beautiful State of Maine. We work independently as well as alongside some of the largest and best known law firms in the United States in offering highly creative and strategic solutions to our clients, handling matters ranging from state and federal regulatory and tax issues affecting direct marketers and online sellers to the management of international intellectual property portfolios, from state tax planning and audit defense to complex federal, state, and administrative litigation (including before the United States Supreme Court), and from vendor and other commercial negotiations to employment issues. Because of our small size, our lawyers enjoy substantial client interaction, develop close and collegial relationships with their colleagues, and have significant opportunities to develop leadership roles both in legal matters and in firm affairs.
FIRM LIFE
Why Maine? And why Brann & Isaacson?
The answer lies in the firm's ability to offer its attorneys the best of both worlds: a sophisticated national practice often found at much larger law firms and close personal interactions in a collegial working environment. As a small and highly selective employer, Brann & Isaacson hires individuals –– not associate classes –– and works with each of its lawyers to develop their own unique niche, interests, and practice area.
The firm’s small size also means that associates are given the opportunity for substantial client contact and meaningful work early on in their careers, all under the tutelage of experienced partners. Indeed, Brann & Isaacson encourages its associates to take on increasingly important roles in complex and challenging projects. In Brann & Isaacson’s “open door” atmosphere, tactical discussions are encouraged between and among all of our attorneys at every level of experience.
Just as it strikes the right balance in terms of size and sophistication (small enough to foster collegial relationships, yet large enough to offer challenging work), Brann & Isaacson’s location in Maine means that “work/life balance” is more than just a token slogan. Mainers understand that job satisfaction requires more than just hours spent in the office, and the State of Maine offers a number of opportunities for young professionals to become involved in their legal and home communities. Maine's quality of life and natural beauty make it the perfect setting to build a career and a life. Outside the office, lawyers at Brann & Isaacson find time to be accomplished blacksmiths, college professors, law school lecturers, jazz musicians, award-winning writers, and community leaders.
OUR SUMMER PROGRAM
Each year, Brann & Isaacson offers a 10 to 12 week summer program designed to expose qualified law students to the breadth and scope of the firm's practice. The firm draws selectively from law schools across the country, and considers exceptional students in both their first and second years of law school. The size of the program generally ranges from two to three participants each year who are considered for associate status within the firm.
Summer associates work directly with attorneys on varying legal issues for the firm's national client base.
While legal research and writing are critical part of their work, our summer associates also participate in client meetings and teleconferences, and have opportunities to attend hearings, trials, and depositions. Work distribution is carefully monitored to ensure that each summer associate is given as broad an experience as possible; nevertheless, individuals expressing an interest in certain practice areas are given the opportunity to gain experience in those areas.
We strive to make our summer program a learning experience and a hands-on working experience. By the time the program ends, our associates know what it means to be a lawyer at Brann & Isaacson, with careful attention paid to our core philosophies and strategic approach to problem solving. Summer associates are provided informal feedback on their work, and, at the end of the summer, a more formal evaluation is provided based upon input from all of our lawyers. Along the way, we also ask our summer associates to evaluate their summer at the firm as we strive to make our program as beneficial as possible to law students poised to make important decisions about their careers.
Of course, throughout the summer, the firm hosts a variety of social activities, which may include dinners, local theater, baseball games, firm functions, and informal gatherings.
